Guidance
Supporting our students to understand who they are, explore their opportunities and take their next steps with confidence.
Guidance in Salerno
In Salerno, Guidance plays an important role in supporting our students throughout their post-primary journey. Our Guidance provision follows the Department of Education and Youth’s Whole-School Guidance approach, recognising that guidance is a developmental process that supports students from First Year through Sixth Year.
Our programme encompasses personal and social development, educational guidance and career guidance, helping students to develop self-awareness, confidence, decision-making skills and an understanding of their own strengths, interests and aspirations.
Junior Cycle & Transition Year
Throughout Junior Cycle, students are supported in making informed choices about subjects, programmes and future pathways, while developing the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the opportunities and decisions ahead. In Transition Year, Guidance supports students in exploring their interests, skills, values and potential career pathways, including through work experience, career exploration and engagement with the world beyond school.
Senior Cycle & Future Pathways
As students progress through Senior Cycle, Guidance supports them in making informed decisions about their subjects, Leaving Certificate programmes and future options. This includes exploring universities and higher education, Further Education and Training (FET), PLC courses, apprenticeships, employment and other pathways, as well as supporting students through the CAO process and the many decisions associated with life after school.
Personal Development & Wellbeing
Guidance also has an important role in supporting students’ personal and social development and wellbeing. Individual guidance counselling, group and classroom guidance, information sessions and one-to-one support provide opportunities for students to reflect, seek advice, explore their options and make choices that are right for them.
A Whole-School Approach
Our Guidance Counsellor works collaboratively with students, parents/guardians, teachers, Year Heads, the Student Support Team, SEN/SET colleagues and external partners. Through this whole-school approach, we aim to ensure that every student has access to appropriate guidance and is supported to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed choices throughout school and into the future.
In Salerno, we want every student to leave school with a strong understanding of who they are, what they can do, what opportunities are available to them and how they can take their next steps with confidence.
